Surface Duo to Get a Major Camera Update in October: Report

The Microsoft Surface Duo was officially announced last month. It went up for pre-order and was made ready for mobile productivity, with side by side views, and is ideal for most tasks. We’ve seen the dual-screen design and internals as shown off in a video. It comes with enterprise-level security by Microsoft and high benchmark scores. A source said it outperforms other flagship devices. The device was also promised with three years of Android upgrades and the first software update is now available. It’s mainly for the camera and it is a major update.

Most reviewers of the Surface Duo started out loving the device the moment they took it out of the box and held it in their hands. That honeymoon, however, was mostly short-lived thanks to some very noticeable bugs. While not deal breakers, the accumulation of these rough edges made an already experimental device feel even more unreliable. Fortunately, it seems that Microsoft has scheduled a major update for the Surface Duo next month, hopefully, to address most of those concerns.

Microsoft is set to release an official Some features are being tested for the next major update due in October. The Surface Duo’s camera will be updated with the following: Image Refiner, Photo Solid, zzHD, and Multi-Frame support. The camera-centric release will bring an AI-based automatic image optimizer.

It’s not clear but Photo Solid could be about 3D scanning with the camera. The Electronic Image Stabilization will be enhanced. The HDR image can now be previewed without any shutter lag in live preview with the zzHDR feature. Multi-Frame support will be added as well.

Alongside the new camera features, the update will also fix major performance issues at hand. This includes a noticeable lag when you drag and drop apps between the two screens, app freezes, and crashes when you try to expand the apps across the displays. Some of the apps are also said to freeze when you use the gesture to switch them out.

Image Refiner, as the name suggests, will use AI to help optimize the image quality. A ‘Photo Solid’ feature, which could be related to 3D modeling using the camera, is also said to be in the works. Microsoft also wants to make it possible for Surface Duo users to get a live preview of HDR images without any shutter lag. Last but not least, you can expect improvements in EIS (electronic image stabilization) and multi-frame support for the single 11MP camera onboard.

The update for the Surface Duo is expected to land mid-October and may even include Android’s October patches. Future updates will supposedly come on a regular monthly cadence, according to Windows Central’s Zac Bowden. Whether next month’s update will actually address those pain points is actually still uncertain but Microsoft’s window of opportunity won’t stay open for long.
